Science in the River City

EXPERIENCE HANDS ON DYNAMIC SCIENCE WORKSHOPS LED BY FELLOW TEACHERS!

SUPER SIRC

Super SIRC is an extension of our Science in the River City (SIRC) professional development program for K-12 science teachers. Like SIRC it is designed to deepen teachers' understanding of science and provide innovative ideas, lessons, and strategies for teachers to use in their classrooms. However, Super SIRC is a full day of 1-hour and 2-hour long workshops held on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

All workshops are designed and taught by local teachers/professors with strong expertise in NGSS. Workshops are designed to help deepen your knowledge of science and build  connections between real world science and your students. Workshops are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, include hands-on labs and activities, and provide insights from local teacher leaders and  university faculty.

A huge thank you to the Math and Science Teachers Initiative (MSTI) for sponsoring SIRC this year. Because of their support we are able to offer  a discounted registration fees of only $25 this year!

WORKSHOPS

There will be multiple workshops offered throughout the day. Our two-hour workshops will have a science content focus aligned to NGSS Standards and will include modeling an NGSS lesson, insightful teacher moves, and deepen your knowledge of science.

Our one-hour workshops will highlight important pedagogy themes for the science classroom, useful resources for teachers, and highlight Sacramento State's ideal field trip options; the  Planetarium and our new Maker Space.

Workshops will be offered at a variety of elementary, middle school, and high school levels along multiple science subjects.  Look for here for information on offered workshops.

Vendors

As part of all our Science in the River City (SIRC) events, we encourage teachers to network and to learn more about local science and teacher resources in the community. Teachers are encouraged to visit with vendors over lunch, and as an option for an hour after lunch.

Each vendor will receive:

  • a 6’ table to display materials

  • a special acknowledgement in the Super SIRC program

  • a slide in a looping power point presentation to be played as teachers arrive and throughout lunch

  • the opportunity to share information and resources with teachers in Sacramento and the surrounding counties

For additional information and to register as a vendor, please contact Debbie Dennick.

FAQs

How do I pay with a Purchase Order?

We can take Purchase Orders for individual teachers, or we can set up an open PO with your district. Open it up to all of your teachers, or give us a list of pre-approved teachers. We take care of the registration codes, tracking teachers, balances, and alerting you if we get close to the maximum allowance. If funds are already approved, we can get teachers registered right away without needing the Purchase Order in hand! Just have the principal or district office (whoever has approved the payment) email Debbie Dennick confirming the approval and amount of funds.

Do I need to purchase units when I register? How are they counted by my district?

You can purchase units at anytime up until April 30. You must attend the full day to earn units. These are Continuing Education Units, they are not part of a Sac State course! Each district calculates them differently, so you will need to contact you district to confirm they will approve the units and how much they will count for.

What if I need to cancel my workshop? Will I get a refund? What if my district is paying for me?

Please notify us by e-mail no less than seven business days prior to the event to receive a personal refund (minus a $10 process fee) or to make sure your district is not charged. If there is a cancellation within seven days of the event, no refunds will be issued. Teachers are allowed to transfer their registration, as long as we are notified prior to the start of the event.

I registered but haven't received a parking pass. What should I do?

Check your spam folder! District filters will sometimes let our emails through, and sometimes block them. If you still can't find any email from us, make sure you registered through our website. Registering through your district website does not let us know you are coming. If you still can't find the issue, contact us.
